El Itacate Fonda, nestled in the heart of Xalapa, is a beacon for authentic Mexican cuisine. Reviews from delighted patrons highlight the vibrant atmosphere and the fresh, homemade tortillas that anchor their dishes. Graf Starkall, a loyal visitor, praises the restaurant’s consistent quality and great prices, despite a modest complaint about the coffee. This sentiment is echoed by Mert BirdWater, who describes it simply as “the best place in town.”
The menu showcases delightful classics, with Louis Gomez fondly reminiscing about the flavorful "pansita," perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice for a mere 95 pesos. The authenticity of the food resonates deeply with those who've traveled afar, bringing a taste of home to Mexican expatriates. Jake Reaves allocates kudos for the extensive variety on offer, making each visit an opportunity to try something new.
Sparky Andronicus found the overall experience delightful, speaking to the restaurant's fun ambiance and decent service. It’s clear that El Itacate Fonda not only delivers on taste but creates a welcoming space for all who enter. With their commitment to quality and tradition, this gem in Zona Centro is undoubtedly a must-visit for food lovers seeking genuine Mexican fare.

Very authentic restaurant in Xalapa. I returned here again after a year and food was still great for decent prices. Only their coffee is still the same bad but that one is for free so five stars are legit!

Que rico! Very tasty authentic Mexican restaurant. One of my favorites in Xalapa. Super fresh tortillas made right when you walk in and lots of tasty dishes to choose from

I had the pansita (only 95 pesos) and it was really good. It was spicy but not too much. Everything was perfectly cooked. As a Mexican living abroad this feels like heaven. The place is also well decorated and the prices are cheap. This is definitely a good spot to eat classics Mexican dishes.

Such an adorable place! A lot of locals come here. I struggled with my Spanish but the staff was so helpfull and even the guests helped. The protions are big and they come to refill your coffee every 2 minutes which is super nice :) They also put a basket of sweet pastry on the table and in the end they count it in the bill how much pieces you eat. I didn't know that but it was not expensive. Would totally come back 3

If not to take into account that fact that it was too noisy inside (at morning hours), I really liked the place for their quick and polite service, massive portions of food and the taste and good quality of ingredients my breakfast was prepared of. And also I should mention the prices, which are absolutely affordable. Thank you, I did enjoy my first meal in Xalapa!
